Philip BernarD. MD ~ NEOCMDA Chairperson
Dr. Philip Bernard, MD
Chair, NEOCMDA (Northeast Ohio Christian Medical & Dental Association) Dr. Philip Bernard, a passionate family medicine physician and dedicated Christian leader, currently serves as the Chair of the Northeast Ohio Christian Medical & Dental Association (NEOCMDA). Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti in 1958, Dr. Bernard moved to the United States in 1966, settling in Chicago. His life took a pivotal turn in 1979 while attending Stanford University, when he experienced a spiritual rebirth that would shape his personal and professional journey. After completing his medical studies at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1986, Dr. Bernard entered a residency in family medicine at University Hospitals, where he graduated in 1989. Over the next 24 years, he devoted his career to family medicine, with seven of those years focused on hands-on training in dermatology for Kaiser Permanente. Since 2013, Dr. Bernard has specialized exclusively in dermatology, spending the last nine years in the Family Medicine Department at Cleveland Clinic. Beyond his medical career, Dr. Bernard has served in various leadership roles within his church community. He was an Elder at Newsong Church, later Christ Culture, for 10 years and Missions Director for 3 years, overseeing several impactful mission trips. These included travels to Haiti, England, Honduras, Benin, Kenya (twice), Costa Rica, and the Oneida Indian Reservation in Wisconsin. His heart for missions extends to his significant involvement with international students, particularly from China and India, many of whom have come to Christ under his mentorship. Dr. Bernard's commitment to faith, service, and the healthcare community is evident in his leadership of the NEOCMDA, where he works alongside a talented team, including Dr. Mike Chen, to support Christian professionals in medicine and dentistry. He has been married for many years and is a proud father of three children: Justin, Noelle, and Zachary. His son, Zach, is a teacher in South Korea, and Dr. Bernard is also a proud grandfather of four. With a heart for both healing and evangelism, Dr. Bernard continues to inspire others in his professional practice, ministry, and global missions work, dedicating his life to serving both his local and international communities. |
MICHAEL CHEN, MD ~ NEOCMDA Council Member
Michael Chen, MD is a family physician working for University Hospitals as well as in the VA Wade Park ER. He served as treasurer for NEOCMDA for the past 3 years and is excited to be able to carry on the torch from numerous other faithful brothers and sisters in Christ. His vision is to see more and more Christian medical professionals equipped to be disciple-makers and to see the gospel engage the hearts of the people of Northeast Ohio for the glory of Christ.
He believes that God has given us a specific commands to "seek the good of the city" where He has placed us and to preach the gospel to all nations. One way that he engages in this is as a volunteer physician in Faith Baptist Pregnancy and Wellness Center- which is one of his great joys, along with spending time with his wonderful wife Sophia. |
